Christmas Gift Idea

Irish Oak Whiskey Tumbler

Toasted Irish Oak Whiskey Tumbler

Available for purchase on our Store page

A truly original gift idea for whiskey lovers this Christmas.

Inspired by the manufacturing process of whiskeys, Joe laird has developed a Sessile Oak Whiskey Tumbler. Toasted on the inside and shaped like a coopers barrel, the tumbler adopts the same methods used in the coopering and maturation process of whiskey making.

With the manufacturing time of one whiskey tumbler taking a little over five weeks, handcrafting each tumbler is obviously a labour of love for Joe laird. Each piece of wood is carefully selected and monitored closely for imperfections throughout the manufacturing process. Like in the coopering process, each piece must adhere to a set of specifications with regards to size, weight, thickness and colour. However, each piece of wood is a product of nature and, therefore, no two pieces will ever be the same. Each tumbler is a unique piece of art in its own right.

Oaky flavours

Putting the whiskey back into the oak from whence it came, enhances the the whiskey’s woody and vanilla flavours like no glass tumbler ever could. This is an experience that ever true whiskey enthusiast must try.

Hundreds of different flavour compounds have been identified in whisky. The synthesis and degradation and synergistic properties of these compounds is still poorly understood as there are so many aspects contributing to the result of cask maturation.
Oak cask affects whisky by extracting wood compounds that influence the taste directly or together with the spirit compounds or by removing or changing some compounds from the raw spirit.

Master Class with Nick Agar – 2013

nick agar

Nick Agar gives a master class at Joe Laird woodturning studios 2012

After last year’s successful 3 day Master Class with Nick Agar we are delighted to have this incredible wood turning artist back to our shores once again.

Nick will be delivering a two day Master Class on 23rd and 24th of April 2013. He will repeat the class again on 25th and 26th also. The theme on these classes is mainly air brushing and only a small part will be allocated to wood turning. You will turn your own platter and will then decorate it air brush style under the tuition and guidance on Nick.

As always you will have your own work station and all equipment will be supplied for the classes including air brush and paint. If you have your own tools and air brush you are welcome to use them. All you have to do is turn up and we will look after the rest. Places are limited to 6 people per class so book early to avoid disappointment.

Cost of the two day class is €300 per person including lunch and materials. Contact Joe for more details or to make your booking.

Weekly Class – Level 2

*This is a continuation class from our beginner’s class – level 1.

As before this is a ten week structured course and consists of ten 2 hour lessons based over eleven weeks. We will stop for one week due to mid term break. Most of our classes run alongside VEC time tables so we make every effort to follow their school closure times also.

In this class we will be working a lot more with the skew chisel and you will produce one or two items made with this tool only. Its good fun and will give you great encouragement when you see the finish that can be achieved with the skew chisel.

BOWL TURNING.
Now we will start on bowl turning, covering basic design, where the bowl comes from in the tree and why, preparing bowl blanks and holding them on the lathe safely.
We will make two small bowls on this course and both will start out as identical bowl blanks. After you complete your first bowl we will start the second bowl immediately and we will play with a new design for this one. You will be amazed at how well a simple little design on this bowl will alter the appearance and change this bowl completely. All bowls on this course are finished with oils that are food safe and can be used in the home if required.

BOX MAKING
At this stage you should have built up good confidence on the lathe and have good tool control with your wood turning tools. We will now make a lidded box which is a very exciting and challenging project. Again we will go through all the ifs, buts’, and why’s etc and we will complete the project by week 10 bringing this course to its end.

EQUIPMENT
All materials and equipment are provided for on this course; if you have some wood turning tools of your own you should bring them along and use them if you wish.
